When it was discovered a few decades ago that someone could divide at the core of the personality it was initially believed that this was a rare thing and that it was a “disorder.” It was first called Multiple Personality Disorder.
Now decades later we know so much more about this. In fact what we have learned in the last few years is more significant than in all of psychological history.
The soul or deep self is being formed in the first 6 to 7 years of life. When a child is traumatized and is forced to deal with emotions or messages that create great inner conflict — he or she will inwardly solve the problem. Repressed and amnesiac memories represent a way of doing this. However a certain percentage of children are intelligent and/or creative enough to go beyond this inner protection. They will divide or fragment or split a part of their core self to hold the pain and conflict and protect themselves from it.
The result of this is now called Dissociative Identity Disorder. DID it is not really a disorder. It should be called marvelous internal protective system. Some children may only divide a few times, other children may go through regular trauma and need to divide a lot! So some people create a simple inner protective system, others a more complex one.
Many people who are genuinely divided at their core self may never recognize that this is the case. The inner identities alternate in a seamless manner that may only appear to be mood changes, behavior changes, life inconsistency, etc. etc.
We at Freedom & Healing in Christ, like others helping fragmented people, are discovering that many, many people are divided in their deep self. Many of the clients who come to us have been mis-diagnosed and improperly treated often for years or decades. Many have been labeled Bi-Polar Disorder, OCD, Depression or Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. The deep reality is that the core of the identity has fragmented and needs inner healing and integration.
God has blessed the staff of Freedom & Healing in Christ with growing insight and success with fragmented clients. We are even endearing to help clients who have been ritually abused and deliberately fragmented through rituals. With God’s healing presence we will continue to be a place of healing and restoration for these people.
